Abstract:The relationship between crime and unemployment has been of interest to both economists and sociologists. It has been argued that having a job with a good salary is likely to reduce the chances that an individual will turn to criminal activities. A time-series study in the United States from 1940 to 1984 indicates that unemployment was associated with suicide rates, especially for white males, but not with homicide rates.
