Abstract:The use of an old trick has been a major factor in the expansion of a number of companies - and the cause of several fatalities. Earnings per share go up, the share price goes up, market capitalism goes up, to be followed by the directors' pay. In the end, the magicians usually find that the knack has deserted them. Perhaps they have grown too big. So look out for a new generation of budding magicians the next time the bull market started to roll. And be prepared for casualties.
