Abstract:Advocates of corporate social responsibility used to claim that the market would reward ethical behaviour. By the 1970's, it was clear that ethics and business often conflict. Even then, ethicists shield away from the messy moral dilemmas managers face. But in considering the costs of doing the right thing, today's ethicists and business people must get their hands dirty.
