Abstract:In the 1990's, long run competitiveness in global industries is less a matter of rivalry and more a question of competition between business systems. Thus, what is critical for General Motors is less its rivalry with Ford and Chrysler, and more its ability to outperform the business systems of Toyota and Nissan, the networks that support Mercedes and Volvo, and the emerging business system that Hyundai is forging. Instead of developing and using market power to gain competitive advantage, multinational firms will have to collaborate aimed at enhancing their mutual competitiveness.
