Abstract:Labor productivity in East European industries is several times lower than in comparable industries in the West.Revitalization of industrial production means a gradual closing of this productivity gap industry by industry. One of the questions is whether the revitalization will occur primarily through restructuring of old industries or through creation of new ones.It is argued in the article, that due to social barriers aggainst the necessary reduction of labor force and due to lack of complex technical and managerial know-how the old firms will be at a disadvantage compared to the newly created ones. Therefore, in the long run the productivity gap will be mainly closed by fast growing new firms. The case of Slovene nautical industry is discussed as an example.
