Abstract: | During the transformation process to date and within a general framework of declining industrial output, a process of structural economic change has occurred, characterised by an increasing bias towards raw materials and basic goods in industrial production. A central force behind this shift in the structure of industrial production was the liberalisation of foreign trade. While suppliers of raw materials and low value-added inputs were able to partially offset the decline in domestic demand by raising exports, the output losses of producers of manufactured goods were exacerbated by their lack of competitiveness against imported goods. In view of rising labour costs and the massive fall in investment in manufacturing industry during recent years, no revesal of this process of structural change can be expected for the near future. |
