| Abstract: | A heuristic for machine cell/part family identification that addresses some important design constraints is presented. A model is used to determine the number of each type of machine necessary to process the parts. The heuristic identifies a machine cell and corresponding part family. It ascertains whether the design constraints are satisfied. If not, it modifies the original machine cell/part family combination so that the design constraints are satisfied. Performance of the heuristic is analysed and concluding remarks are provided. A detailed listing of the various steps involved in the heuristic is provided. |
