Abstract:Large amounts of time, money and effort are invested by progressive organisations in the routine administration of staff attitude surveys. They are prized for the potential business gains they promise and fit well with the "caring employer" image of the 1990s. Typically, these surveys yield a vast quantity of data, which is treated to sophisticated statistical analyses and delivered to managers' desks in the form of highly professional reports replete with charts and graphs. Yet the real purpose of a staff attitude survey is not simply to gather data, but to use that data to feed management practice and policy and contribute to organisational development.
