Abstract: | Arrow et al. (1995) make three main points: (1) The proclaimed "inverted-U" relationship between environmental quality and per capita income does not hold for dispersed or accumulating effects, effects on resource stocks, "downstream" or "other country" effects. (2) Although the world has some finite human carrying capacity, it is more appropriate to consider environmental sustainability in terms of ecosystem resilience, a decline in which is often associated with sudden and irreversible losses of biological productivity. |
