Abstract:This paper takes the view that the fir is a way of organizing learning and a source of capabilities for innovative moves. This requires seeing the firm's problem as one not only of forming appropriate internal organizing structures, but also of competing in an environment where new problems regularly emerge as a result of strategic outcompeting moves by rivals. Market and firm are shown to interact, rather than being independent alternatives. This altered perspective is given sharper definition by comparing and contrasting it with the results of transactions cost analysis.
