Abstract:Are designers responsible for all of the uses of the systems they create? Computer decision systems have become an integral part of the decision making apparatus of many public and private organizations. In the U.S., decisions made by Congress and the executive branch are increasingly based on computer models that simulate the affect of public policy decisions. Computer decision systems promise a variety of benefits leading to more informed decision making: assistance in coping with complexity, the ability to manage uncertainty in a rational way, efficiency, and consistency.
