Abstract:It is a vision of an America where children care for their aging parents, neighbors look in on neighbors, and churches and charities aid society's neediest. Business helps weave local safety nets for the poor. Farmers - freed from government constraint - plant what they want. Individuals and companies pay lower taxes to a shrunken federal government. Now, imagine the world where the elderly no longer enjoy the financial and emotional security of Medicare's subsidized health insurance. Instead of having Social Security, Americans would have to save for themselves - or do without in old age.
