Abstract:During the past 15 years, manufacturers have focused much of their energy on increasing the flexibility of their factories. It is obvious, however, that there is a limit to manufacturing flexibility, at least from a cost-effective standpoint. At some point , extreme flexibility is either impossible or prohibitively expensive. When you reach this stage, it is mandatory to ask yourself what other choice you have. But maybe you should ask this question sooner, before you unnecessarily spend money increasing flexibility beyond what is needed.
