Abstract:Job insecurity is a fact of life today, but what effect does it have on managers' loyalty and trust in their companies? The authors studied the effects of the threat of redundancy on a group of senior staff, whose fortunes they followed over a year. Recent newspaper headlines have put in print what many personnel professionals should already know - the demise of the "job for life" is making workers ill. But is it also making managers think twice about their commitment to employers? In the past, the cost to the employer of loyalty and flexibility was relatively high job security for employees.
