Abstract:The tremendous growth of China's exports over the past fifteen years has turned the country into one of the most important players on the world market. This position has only underlined the importance of China's ongoing negotiations for membership of the World Trade Organization. China's offer for WTO membership involves quite substantial reductions in tariffs and nontariff barriers in one of the world's largest and most rapidly expanding markets. A traditional Computable General Equilibrium assessment of the gains from liberalization in China typically leaves out two important features.
