Abstract:Although the potentials offered by new technology for dealing with the strategic challenges facing manufacturers today are considerable, the strategic elements of an investment decision appear to be causing problems. This paper examines the more well known strategic models. The apparent conflict between accountants and engineers over the appraisal of capital projects is also highlighted. Considerable evidence is available to support the claim that the financial appraisal methods used by industry to evaluate capital investment may be inappropriate on their own for today's high technology business environment.
