Abstract:The bigger they get, the better they get. Seventeen years ago when the U. S. railroad industry was deregulated some 40 sizable carriers lumbered over the nation's rails. Many were losing money or barely profitable, and trucking lines were stealing their business by the ton. But Consolidation of railroads is accelerating like a runaway locomotive - and as it does, the emerging rail giants are winning back business. Some 40% of intercity freight now chugs behind locomotives, up from 35%.
