Abstract:This paper explains why mobility rates decline with age. The approach enables to disentangle the effects of the benefits and the costs of job mobility. The paper also take into consideration differences in working conditions. The results show that all factors which determine job mobility become more unfavourable towards a change of jobs when the worker gets older. The simulation results show that the cost of mobility increases when the worker gets older. The parameter estimates of the structural model indicate that this is a tenure effect rather than a pure age effect. Tenure increases the cost of job mobility. As a result older workers with longer tenures have higher costs of mobility.
