Abstract:The analysis of technological change has made tremendous progress since the development of modern growth theory in the mid-1950s. After an ebb during which macroeconomists did battle over business cycles theories, interest revived about a decade ago in an effort to fuse the earlier qualitative endogenous technology models of Joseph Schumpeter with the standard neoclassical model. The major developments include evolutionary economics, the insights surrounding path dependence of technological evolution and the "new growth theory" of Paul Romer and others.
