Abstract:We analyze profit-maximizing prices for non-storable goods such as services in situations of interdependent demand across time periods. Thereby, we extend the findings of the "peak-load pricing"-literature into two directions. First, we do not only state the conditions for profit maximizing prices, but develop a procedure to determine them. Second, we state conditions for profit maximizing prices as well as a procedure to determine them in situations of fixed capacity. Additionally, we show why "peak-load pricing" yields to better results than the "Niehans-rule". The structure of the optimal prices are analyzed by the help of numerical examples. They show that prices in the peak-period very often substantially surpass prices in the off-peak. We conclude with some hints on suboptimal prices in various industries.
