Abstract:A recent national survey shows that more than 70% of the largest companies in the U.S. conduct formal appraisals of their chief executive officers. Clearly, CEOs need to be held accountable for their performance, and a systematic evaluation by the corporate board seems to be the best way. The question, then, is not "Should such appraisals be done?" but rather "How can they be done well?" To answer that question, the authors examined CEO appraisal practices at companies known to be leaders in this activity.
