| Abstract: | This article concentrates on a detailed examination of investor behavior in the industry. It looks first at the expansion in the scale of domestic mining operations during the first half of the nineteenth century and the widening search for capital from local, through regional, to national markets. It then surveys the limitations to that expansion and emerging regional differences in the importance of recourse to the London market. |
