Abstract:Must firms compete on all dimensions of value simultaneously? Or can managers "pick and choose" among market segments and deploy a variety of strategies to meet customer needs? One of the basic concepts underlying operations strategy is that of the trade-off. Since the early days of this field, researchers have focused on the "inherent" trade-offs present between the various elements of value. The authors show that while simultaneity may exist at operational levels, trade-offs exist at strategic levels.
