Abstract:This paper focuses upon the competition and efficiency issues involved in the granting of broadcast rights by sports teams or leagues and their resolution on both sides of the Atlantic. Although the authors do not offer any new insights on these well-researched theoretical issues, the authors provide evidence to suggest that such problems are much less acute in the United States than in Europe. We begin with a discussion of the evolution of sports leagues in the United States and Europe. The authors then turn to the changing structure of broadcasting on both sides of the Atlantic. Finally, the authors analyse the changes in the structure of sports broadcast rights and their likely effect on league balance, league monopoly power, and market power in broadcasting.
