Abstract: | The "over-regulated" German labour market is held to represent one of the main causes of Germany's comparatively low attractiveness as a business location. The paper analyses the effect of labour market regulations on firm location decisions with the help of the theory of real options. Implications for the self-selection of international investors are derived in the context of a British-German comparison and are confronted with data from a survey on US-multinationals with manufacturing subsidiaries in the UK and/or Germany. Systematic differences between UK and German subsidiaries of US multinationals do exist, and for the better part they are compatible with the hypotheses derived (original in German). |
