Abstract:This article examines the relation between gasoline-price changes and demand for lodging products such as hotels. The results indicate that U.S. lodging demand declines when gas prices rise. However, concerning hotels situated in urban areas where public transportation is available, the dependency is smaller. The findings imply that fewer transportation alternatives may contribute to decline in rooms sold, and that travellers staying in economy and midscale hotels may consider gasoline price to be the most important factor in their consumption decisions.
