Abstract:This paper aims to identify the environmental motivations (hereafter as: motivs.) associated with the decision to initiate the process for ISO 14001 certification (here as: cert.) and also to check whether such motivs. undergo any changes once the company obtains its cert., experiencing its actual effects. It is distinguished btw. ethical, competitive and relational motivs., and compared is the importance of these motivs. in four company stages as to the ISO 14001 cert. as: not considered, considered, in process and awarded. There is a logit analysis applied over the data supplied by 184 Spanish manufacturers from three different industrial sectors. It is concluded that the decision to pursue the ISO 14001 cert. responds to ethical and competitive motivs., and that once the company gets its cert., the company portfolio of environmental motivs. does not change significantly.
