Abstract:This article discusses the importance of social norms in job searching. A direct measure of the social norm to work is presented. The sronger the norm, the more quickly unemployed people find a new job. This can be explained by utility differences that likely are due to social pressure. Unemployed people are considerably unhappier than employed people and their reduction in happiness is the larger, the stronger the social norm is.
