Abstract: | This study examines the role of thrift in a shopping (hereafter as: sh-ing.) process - both economic and hedonic - through an ethnography of sh-ing. which takes place in five stores in a U.S. Midwestern town. Taking a dialectical perspective on the study of shopping (Sherry's 1990 and Miller's 1998) findings on the role of thrift are extended by showing that in the thrift sh-ing. context thrift co-exists with treat, and the pursuit of thrift can itself become a hedonic experience. In addition, six ways are identified in which consumers practise thrift in thrift sh-ing. and the hedonic benefits that they derive from this money-saving activity. |
