Abstract:Multinational corporations (MNCs) are integrating their value activities into global corporate strategies. Typical for this development is extensive functional specialization in the organization and resource interdependencies between the different units of the MNC. A study of 66 foreign subsidiaries of large German MNCs is presented in the article and the results show how there is at least an average degree of functional specialization, although the hierarchical mechanisms are still most common. Country-specific, industry-specific and company-specific factors seem to influence both the configuration and the coordination of MNCs. The author concludes how against the assumptions only a weak connection between the configuration and coordination of value activities can be perceived in the data.
