| Abstract: | This article studies the relationship between public expenditure and the spreading of democracy in Western Europe over the period 1830-1938. The data includes the size of the electorate, the election rule, electoral participation, and measures of public spending in 12 countries. The authors find various correlations between features associated with democracy and public expenditures. |
