Abstract:Using narratives to communicate in society, and especially the role of narrative in the conflict between different traditions, has drawn an increased amount of academic attention in recent years. Based on this, virtue approaches to business ethics have been developed. This paper argues for a form of virtue that will focus business on society's needs rather that better business itself. The argument is developed in two ways. First, by challenging the predominant business narrative with a one from the environmental tradition. Adopting virtues promoted by an environmental narrative could shape business practices and challenge current business conventions. Second, suggestions are given on how we could change managerss perceptions of business to reflect these environmentally based virtues.
