Abstract:In the paper, an empirical study evaluating the usability of two interaction approaches used by Web-based application software (hereafter as: sw.) is reported. Data for the study was collected using 107 subjects. Each participant performed the same tasks on both systems (here as: syst./systs.): a user-driven, form-based (as: f-b.) syst. and a syst.-driven interview-based (as: i-b.) syst. For the data analysis, factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques were used. It is shown that for most users, the i-b. approach was a more desirable feature for a complex syst. In addition, the derived usability model (as: u-mod.) was useful in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of business-syst. Web sites such as tax-preparation sites. Additionally, the resulting u-mod. indicated important determinants in the selection of Web-based sw: the reputation of the sw. application and its producer, the ease of use of the sw., and sw. support.
