Abstract:Principals and managers have historically been the focus of organizational governance, as well as the goal of maximizing owner wealth. This article proposes that an ethical perspective of organizational followers can also be profitable. Two perspectives of organizational governance are introduced: Principal Theory that suggests that organizational owners and managers can often be ethically opportunistic and take advantage of employees who serve them and Principle Theory that concentrates on guiding principles that are sometimes taken too far in organizations. By doing this, the article provides insights into the value of rethinking ethical duties owed to organizational followers.
