Abstract:Using a sample of 270 unquoted, private equity backed firms, this paper demonstrates that the quality of accounting information from private companies available publicly is affected by their shareholder structure. In particular, lower quality accounting information is produced in companies in which private equity (PE) investors have a high equity stake. This result may be explained by that PE investors with high equity stakes can have other means to monitor their portfolio companies contrary to companies with low equity stakes.
