Abstract:The paper examines the impact of hyperbolic discounting and use of commitment mechanisms on individualsÂ’ caloric consumption. To solve the overweight problem in the USA it is tried to move to long-term health goals from short-term consumption decisions. The survey was made by using data from the Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals. The findings reveal that nutrition information works well for some dieters, but not for the others. It is recommended that obese dieters would start to act like hyperbolic discounting.
