Abstract:This study focuses on the structural aspects of interlocking directorate (hereafter as: i-l. dirs.) networks (as: net/s) within and among 15 European countries. Data were gathered in 2006 concerning over 360 corporations with more than 6100 board positions in 15 European countries. There are found large quantitative differences (henceforth as: diff/s.) in net/s densities within countries. These diff/s. are strongly and significantly related to the 'variety of capitalism' in place. Based on an analysis of the i-l. dirs. across country borders, uncovered is a European i-l. dirs. net/s. with different countries taking quite different positions. A country's international position is strongly and significantly related to its European Union (EU) membership duration. Furthermore, there are indications of a link btw. the structure of the i-l. dirs. net/s. within a country and how that country is positioned in the international network.
