Abstract:Arguments are advanced for applying fieldwork methods to economic phenomena with specific reference to a particular empirical application to small, new owner/managed enterprises. Issues such as the distinction between field and site, sampling techniques, ethical standards and instruments used in this instance were: participant observation: an administered questionnaire to gather numerical data; a semistructured interview to gather qualitative data and to ''ground'' evolving theory. The practicalities of their use are discussed in full details.
