| Abstract: | Bilateral protectionism as a special form of trade relations between Canada and the United States is examined. Within the frame of a case study the absurdity of some trade frictions owing to the bilateral protectionism is shown. The case of the 1982 billion dollar subsidized subway car sale by the Bombardier company of Montreal to the New York City subway system is examined in detail. The counteraction of the Budd Company is analyzed. The political confrontation is sketched. Some ideological connotations are highlighted. Implications for Canada-US trade are summarized. Some conclusions are drawn regarding competition in protected markets. |
