Abstract:A growing number of corporations are making room for a supercomputer. The supercomputer has spawned new progeny in minisupers and mainframes with vector processors. These are essential for numerically intensive programs that use corporate data for new applications (optimization, modeling). However neither business application software nor sophisticated compilers are yet available. Other obstacles remain as well, but vendors have seized on the potential for supercomputing in the commercial sector that will have IS managers' heads turning for quite some time. New capabilities of supercomputers are evolving: high capacity data retrieval, natural language processing ability, simulation etc.
