Abstract:Trade figures about the decline in manufacturing in the UK are analyzed. Factors influencing the situation are listed, literature is reviewed. Former empirical work on competitiveness is criticized. A description is presented of the substance of marketing in two areas: organization and planning for marketing. Findings of two separate studies are described. Methodology is outlined, research samples are examined. Company organizations and strategies are analyzed. The findings highlight the need for general involvement of functional departments throughout the new product development process, and an active interest at the higher echelons of management in marketing.
