| Abstract: | The categories of technological alliances are discussed. Results of extensive interviews with managers involved in coalition in 15 alliances are presented. Driving forces behind the alliances are examined. Reduction of costs of access to a technological capability and subsidies or savings due to the shared costs of research are the most popular reasons. Negative aspects are analysed as well. Vertical and horizontal alliances are compared. Technological alliances are classified as pre-competitive and competitive according to the distance of the alliance from real market competition. Major conclusions and managerial implications are summarized. The EUREKA project is used as an example. |
