Abstract:Despite rapid employment growth, real wages have stagnated in the United States since the early 1970s. Economists have debated wether the proportion of jobs with low earnings has increased, and whether earnings inequality has widened. In a thorough review of existing research, it is found that jobs with low annual earnings do make up an increasing share of those held by key groups such as full-time, year-round workers. Earnings inequality has increased within and between industries and occupations. Arresting the growth of low earnings jobs requires measures that increase wages and productivity in tandem.
