Abstract: | The main stages in the evolution of informations systems (IS) and technologies are identified. First came Data Processing (DP) from the 1950s through the mid-1960s; next - in a major leap - Management Information Systems (MIS). In the 1980s, Information Resource Management (IRM), a more comprehensive approach, hold the key to the effective formulation of operating policies and long-term strategy. In the 1980s, organizational decentralization is continuing and may be a long-range trend in the US. This trend is forcing decentralization of ISs and hardware configurations. Similar trends in applications are also analyzed. A detailed description of IRM is given. Implications for ISs professionals are summarized. |
