Abstract:The interaction of rising research costs and increasing official doubt about the value of such long-term research has led to the considerable interest shown recently in the policy rationale for continuing support for fusion. The subject is introduced, the focus being on what, technologically, fusion is meant to do, what its past and future costs are, and what the alternatives are presently. It is examined in broad terms how fusion officially is and can be justified, and what its possible future directions are. Crucially, with less inclination to take fusion research as self-evidently worth doing, it will increasingly be compared on equal terms with alternative ways of insuring against the uncertainties of the long time energy future.
