Abstract:Ways are explored in which decision support systems can be described and compared. The most widely read portion of decision support systems literature has addressed the procedural issues of building support systems rather than the substantive questions concerning their content. The immediate focus of research attention should, therefore, be on developing appropriate means for describing and differentiating environments, and especially, systems. A three-tiered approach is presented for characterizing decision support systems. The first tier analyses a system's functional capabilities. The second level considers a system's components as seen by its users. The third tier examines a system's attributes or its characteristics as a whole.
