Abstract:The feasibility, timing and costs of decommissioning commercial-scale nuclear reactors is examined. As in other areas of nuclear policy, insulation from wider regulatory and political pressures is unlikely to prove sustainable once decommissioning becomes a reality. The postponement of dismantling now favoured by both the industry and some environmentalists may come about less by conscious design than by the probable difficulties in quickly enough finding adequate waste disposal sites to absorb the very large volumes of low-level wastes that will be produced. It is likely that the balance of environmental considerations will play a dominant part in future policy.
