Abstract:The quest for quality should characterize also the key activity of making decisions. Employee participation - particularly in the form of quality circles - has been found to yield tremendous benefits in terms of productivity, satisfaction, and commitment. However, a key to success of group-assisted decision-making and problem-solving is the effective use of contrast. In order to avoid the "groupthink" phenomenon or "the Abilene Paradox", managers must effectively balance agreement and conflict in their organizations. Six techniques of injecting contrast into the work of a team are described. The result of implementing these techniques will be higher quality decisions.
