Abstract:It is demonstrated that a weak home currency diminishes the future competitiveness of some firms since foreign competitors use strong currencies to make strategic investments on relatively more favorable terms. The importance of growth options is emphasized. Firms that must compete globally in "forward-looking" industries, where heavy investment today is the key to competitiveness tomorrow, are likely to be harmed by a weak home currency. It is shown how business opportunities change when exchange rates change. The results of analysis of empirical data lead to the conclusion that devaluation of a currency is short sighted and potentially harmful to a country's competitive standing.
