Abstract: | Research in production planning focuses on the needs of make-to-stock companies. The make-to-order sector, although constituting an important part of world history, has received relatively little attention. This may be due to the assumption that systems developed for make-to-stock firms can also be used by the make-to-order companies. However, the requirements of the two sectors are quite different. These differences are identified and it is discussed if research can meet the needs of the make-to-order sector. A number of important application areas are considered, including production scheduling, capacity control and the setting of delivery dates. |
